چکیده

We have measured with a tunnel probe the energy distribution function of Landau quasiparticles in metallic diffusive wires connected to two reservoir electrodes, with an applied bias voltage. The distribution function in the middle of a 1.5-mm-long wire resembles the half sum of the Fermi distributions of the reservoirs. The distribution functions in 5-mm-long wires are more rounded, due to interactions between quasiparticles during the longer diffusion time across the wire. From the scaling of the data with the bias voltage, we find that the scattering rate between two quasiparticles varies as ́22, where ́ is the energy transferred. [S0031-9007(97)04367-6]

Magnetic-field-dependent quasiparticle energy relaxation in mesoscopic wires.

In order to find out if magnetic impurities can mediate interactions between quasiparticles in metals, we have measured the effect of a magnetic field B on the energy distribution function f(E) of quasiparticles in two silver wires driven out of equilibrium by a bias voltage U. In a sample showing sharp distributions at B=0, no magnetic field effect is found, whereas, in the other sample, round...

Critical voltage of a mesoscopic superconductor.

We study the influence of a voltage-driven nonequilibrium of quasiparticles on the properties of short mesoscopic superconducting wires. We employ a numerical calculation based upon the Usadel equation. Going beyond linear response, we find a nonthermal energy distribution of the quasiparticles caused by the applied bias voltage. It is demonstrated that this nonequilibrium drives the system fro...

Multiple Andreev reflections revealed by the energy distribution of quasiparticles.

We have performed the tunnel spectroscopy of the energy distribution function of quasiparticles in 5-microm-long silver wires connected to superconducting reservoirs biased at different potentials. The distribution function f(E) presents several steps, which are manifestations of multiple Andreev reflections at the NS interfaces. The rounding of the steps is well explained by electron-electron ...

Dynamics and energy distribution of nonequilibrium quasiparticles in superconducting tunnel junctions

We present a full theoretical and experimental study of the dynamics and energy distribution of nonequilibrium quasiparticles in superconducting tunnel junctions (STJ’s). STJ’s are often used for single-photon spectrometers, where the numbers of quasiparticles excited by a photon provide a measure of the photon energy. The magnitude and fluctuations of the signal current in STJ detectors are in...

Localization of quasiparticles in a disordered vortex

We study the diffusive motion of low-energy normal quasiparticles along the core of a single vortex in a dirty, type-II, s-wave superconductor. The physics of this system is argued to be described by a one-dimensional supersymmetric nonlinear σ model, which differs from the σ models known for disordered metallic wires. For an isolated vortex and quasiparticle energies less than the Thouless ene...
